Sunday at the DIA

Lunch followed by a couple exhibits (don't worry Margaret- we will go back when you are in town).  The photography exhibit had a photo done by my current photo instructor.   Also had an interesting musical presentation of Armenian music.

30 Flights of Stairs

Thats what my Fitbit said I did today.  It must be wrong but now that I am sitting here with my feet up, my legs feel like I could have done that many.

Of Fridays I volunteer at the weaving shop at Greenfield Village.  A lot of what I do takes me up and down the stairs.  Last week I recorded 10 flights, the week before 5.  Since I have had this thing - about a month now - the most stairs I ever did was 15 in one day.

So looking at the 30 - you can tell I didn't have the best day I have ever had working on the Jacquard loom.  When there is a mistake you need to go upstairs and reset it and then try to go back to a "good point".   Today was a day of MANY mistakes that I could not get back to the correct point.  Once I finally did I decided it was time to cut my losses and go home - before I had to go up and down those stairs again.

Better luck next week.

A Vermeer Sort of Day

Since the Vermeer painting that is on loan to the DIA is only on display until tomorrow we went down to see it.  It was displayed next to two other Dutch paintings from the same timeframe - you could really see why Vermeer is so revered.   The painting was in the entryway to the Dutch gallery so you could see it across the courtyard - it glowed even from the distance.

Always fun to people watch.  There was a lady holding up two different pictures of the painting in front of the picture - first one, then the other.  Don't quite know what she was looking for.  I do not believe a picture can capture the glow of parts of the painting.

So I go home and read the next chapter of the book I am reading "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" and I come across these sentences:  "Even Vermeer can't convince me to hold life dear.  He is sublime, but he is dead."    I don't agree with the first sentence but do agree that his paintings are sublime.

The other exhibit we took in today was an exhibit of prints from the DIA collection done by Picasso and Matisse.  Matisse is one of my favorite artists.  I was very impressed with what Detroit has in their collection.  And it was so good to see so many people viewing the exhibit.

Christmas Eve

A grey day - typical for this area this time of year.  Getting ready to start some of the prep for tomorrows dinner.  I dug out the old Christmas records - yes records.  I still have a turntable and one of my favorite Christmas albums is only on vinyl.

Thought I would share some of the Christmas type pictures from our December trip to the Henry Ford Museum.  We try to go over year to see the tree and train.  This years theme was Lego's as you can see by the train setting.
